Overview

The Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Design and Digital Arts Building is a new state-of-the-art home for the university’s School of Art and Design. The visually striking project was designed by architects Hawkins\Brown and delivered by CPMG Architects, with the construction managed by main contractors Bowmer + Kirkland.

Taylor Maxwell were pleased to work with installers Keyclad to supply Argeton terracotta cladding in a green glazed profiled tile to the site, which was utilised to create a prominent and welcoming gateway to the NTU city campus.

Concept to completion

The 10-storey new build replaces two unused and outdated buildings which previously occupied the site and had become unfit for purpose. These buildings were therefore demolished to make way for the architecturally prominent and modern development, which would become the university’s hub for skills including film, graphic design and illustration.

It was important to the architects and client that the building was constructed as sustainably as possible, with the university’s zero carbon commitment in mind. The materials chosen therefore needed to offer sustainability benefits, whilst fitting in with the local architectural landscape. After carrying out a material analysis of nearby buildings, terracotta was identified as an option that would both suit the locality and provide the required sustainability credentials. Argeton terracotta cladding was proposed as the main facade material, due to its offering of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), alongside BBA certification (22/6507) and CWCT testing.

The Argeton terracotta tiles were selected in a bespoke design, with a projecting edge on each tile creating a rippling and 3D effect across the facade with a vertical rhythm. The glazed green surface complements the green and gold metal cladding used on other sections of the buildings envelope and assists in achieving a unique and eye-catching finish.

The finished project was opened to students in September 2024 and provides users with studios, study spaces, teaching rooms and cutting-edge resources. The Design and Digital Arts building stands as a powerful gateway to the campus, whilst providing the facilities required to inspire current and future students.
