Overview

St Marylebone CE Bridge School is a specialist education facility located in Westminster, designed to support children with speech, language and communication needs. Situated on Beethoven Street in London, the development delivers a contemporary and highly considered learning environment tailored to the specific requirements of both pupils and staff, while blending into its urban context.

Designed by 3BM Ltd and delivered by Galliford Try, the project required a careful balance between high-quality architectural materiality, strict planning considerations and budget constraints. Taylor Maxwell worked closely with the project team to supply a coordinated facade package that combined traditional brick aesthetics with modern cladding systems, helping to achieve the design objectives.

The scheme incorporated facing bricks from our Solus Range, alongside the Corium Brick Cladding and Anvil Metal Cladding systems provided by our partner SBS Cladding. This created a robust and visually cohesive exterior that reflects the character of the surrounding area while introducing a distinct architectural identity.

Concept

The design approach centred around creating a calm, welcoming and functional environment specifically tailored to children with additional communication needs. Spatial planning, material selection and facade detailing were all carefully considered to support a modern and inviting environment, with long-term durability in mind.

The material palette played a significant role in achieving these ambitions. Westminster Yellow brick was selected to complement the architectural character of the surrounding location and meet local authority expectations for material quality and appearance. The warm tones and textured finish provide a timeless look to feel at home within the surrounding streetscape.

Corium brick cladding was chosen to achieve the appearance of traditional masonry while helping to streamline efficient installation on site. The system allowed the project team to achieve a quality finish across the building, ensuring a consistent appearance throughout the facade.

Complementing the brick finishes, Anvil metal cladding systems were introduced to provide contrast and definition across key elevations. The combination of these materials creates depth and visual interest while reinforcing the contemporary educational setting.
