Overview

Set in York’s core conservation area close to the historic city walls, Hudson Quarter is a sensitively designed mixed-use development comprising 127 contemporary apartments and office space.

Taylor Maxwell worked with the architect and contractors to supply the cast stone elements to the scheme, which bring a contemporary yet classic elegance to the building facade. We also supplied the facing bricks and the Proclad brick cladding, which make up the primary facade materials of the building envelope.

Working with the local planning authorities, Fuse Studios pioneered the architectural design which pays homage to the area’s rich heritage and collaborated with contractors Caddick Construction and C&I Smith to deliver the scheme.

Concept to Completion

The 150,000 square foot project which used to be part of the nearby railway station, comprises four buildings and benefits from a beautifully landscaped courtyard. The overarching design vision was to create a structure that sits in harmony with its historic surroundings, while embodying a vibrant aesthetic that is fit for modern living and working.

This delicate balance between the city’s past and present is achieved by using sleek buff brickwork and brick specials across the design, which emulates the reddish tones of the existing local vernacular, together with Proclad brick cladding which was chosen due to its lightweight nature and ability to blend well with the selected bricks.

Wet cast stone in a red colourway was chosen for the cills, heads and copings of the project, compounding the sense of timeless elegance that the design commands. The red colourway blends well with the primary facade materials used, creating a sense of continuity and character throughout the design. Alongside its classic aesthetic, the fact that wet cast stone wears well over time makes it an ideal choice for a building that will adorn the York skyline for years to come. When paired with the contemporary large glass panels and striking railed balconies, the design perfectly balances respect for the past, with a building that will be relevant for posterity.
