As part of the ongoing programme of regeneration in Dunbarton town centre, West Dunbartonshire Council’s new flagship office building at 16 Church Street has recently been completed. The scheme provides a modern workspace for 500 staff together with associated public services in the heart of the town centre, replacing their previous building at Garshake Road on the town’s outskirts.

The project retains the original Gothic Revival façade of William Leiper’s Grade A listed Dunbarton Academy building and Burgh Hall, and extends to the rear to provide a brand new flexible civic space.

Taylor Maxwell worked closely with local Glasgow architects Keppie Design to identify a suitable facing brick that would both sympathise and complement the original elevations whilst also creating an identity of its own. The facing brick chosen delivers a classic aesthetic enriched by variation in the colour and texture. The bright buff tones are offset by distressed features, which give the impression of a long-standing weathered brick.

In addition to the impressive brickwork, delivered by brickwork sub-contractor Lesterose Scotland, we also supplied natural stone indigenous to the local area that provides a strong unity between the retained Gothic façade and the striking contemporary elevations.
