Overview

Located 12 miles from Oxford in the village of North Leigh, Marlborough Gardens is a picturesque housing development delivered by Bewley Homes.

The scheme comprises 50 two, three, four and five-bedroom properties of which 40 per cent have been allocated as affordable housing for local people. Part of the design approach was to integrate Marlborough Gardens seamlessly into the architectural landscape of the North Leigh area. With this in mind, Bewley Homes engaged Taylor Maxwell to supply the walling stone and the red and buff facing brick as the primary facade materials for this project.

Concept to Completion

The overarching vision for this development was to create a collection of properties that maximise the quality of life of its occupants. The scheme was praised for its commitment to providing affordable housing for local people, and for its efforts to employ a 70 per cent local workforce to deliver the development.

Marlborough Gardens is made up of high-quality homes that are fit for modern living, while maintaining a characterful aesthetic that will weather both the elements, and the test of time alike. Walling stone was chosen as the facade material for the properties to the south west of the site, accented by red brick detailing in the form of quoins, heads and cills. A blend of red and buff facing brick was used for properties to the north and east. The choice of material for each orientation was carefully selected to reflect the vernacular of the neighbouring properties nearby. Red or grey tiles were used for the roof of each property, and architectural details such as hipped roofs, dropped eaves and gable fronted designs were implemented to complement North Leigh’s existing roofline.

An emphasis was placed on protecting and integrating existing trees and hedgerows into the scheme to create a pleasant aesthetic rooted in the natural surroundings, and a network of footpaths, and cycling routes were established to link the development together. Pockets of public open space were incorporated into the design for the pleasure of the residents and to maximise the ecological habitat available. The result is a harmonious development that will provide the residents of North Leigh a visually attractive and inviting home for generations to come.
