Overview

Located within Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, Element The Quarter is a large-scale residential development designed to provide a new generation of student and co-living accommodation close to the city’s universities, healthcare facilities and research institutions.

The completed scheme provides 352 apartments, alongside a range of shared amenities including residents’ lounges, co-working areas, a games room, gym, cinema and roof terraces. The development was designed by Falconer Chester Hall for Legacie Developments, with Tate Brickwork Ltd responsible for the brickwork package.

Taylor Maxwell supplied Wienerberger Ltd Kansas Red Multi and Kassandra Multi bricks for the development, providing the masonry materials used across the building’s distinctive external elevations.

The project was completed in summer 2023 following a 68-week brickwork programme. The brickwork package was valued at £1.1 million and involved several technically demanding details, including large sweeping radius brickwork and alternating squint reveals around the windows.

Concept

Element The Quarter formed part of the continued regeneration of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, a 450-acre innovation district bringing together universities, hospitals, research facilities and new residential development. Its location was therefore an important consideration in creating a scheme capable of supporting the area’s growing population of students, graduates and young professionals.

The development was originally conceived as The Rise, but following the acquisition of the site by Legacie Developments they progressed a refreshed design by Falconer Chester Hall. The revised proposals placed greater emphasis on co-living, sustainability and the relationship between the building and its urban setting.

Brick forms a defining part of the architectural approach. The combination of Wienerberger Kansas Red Multi and Kassandra Multi provides tonal variation across the elevations, while the masonry detailing adds depth and movement to what is a substantial building.

Tate Brickwork’s installation included large squint reveals around the windows, alternating from floor to floor. The façade also incorporates a prominent sweeping radius, creating a strong curved masonry feature that becomes particularly evident once viewed from street level.

Alongside its architectural ambitions, sustainability was central to the redesigned scheme. Element The Quarter incorporated a range of energy and resource-saving technologies, including solar panels, air-source heat pumps, mechanical ventilation heat recovery, rainwater recycling and energy-efficient LED lighting. The development was subsequently recognised as the Best Sustainable Residential Development at the UK Property Awards 2023.

Completion

Completed in 2023, Element The Quarter has established a new residential presence within Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, combining 352 apartments with extensive shared facilities designed around community, convenience and connectivity.

The completed façade demonstrates how brick can be used to give a large residential development a strong architectural identity. The varied tones of the Kansas Red Multi and Kassandra Multi bricks work alongside the curved masonry and detailed window reveals to create a façade with depth and visual interest.

For Taylor Maxwell, the project represents another successful collaboration through supplying the specified facing bricks for a prominent addition to Liverpool’s evolving Knowledge Quarter.
