Why bio-based materials deserve greater recognition in construction

The construction industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while keeping up with increased building demand, with designers and contractors looking for practical ways to lower embodied carbon while delivering long-lasting buildings.

Much of the conversation has focused on improving the circularity of traditional materials through reuse and recycling. However, a recent report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation suggests that renewable bio-based materials, including timber, are still often being overlooked despite the important role they can play in creating a more circular built environment.

The report highlights that while materials such as concrete, steel and plastics receive significant attention within circular economy strategies, renewable resources often receive less consideration, even though they can store carbon, regenerate naturally and contribute to lower-carbon construction when responsibly sourced.

Timber's role in a lower-carbon future

Throughout history Timber has long been valued for its strength, versatility and natural appearance, but it is increasingly recognised for the environmental benefits it can bring to construction.

As a renewable material, timber stores carbon absorbed during tree growth for the lifetime of the product. When sourced from responsibly managed forests, where harvested trees are replaced through ongoing forestry management, timber can support both carbon reduction and the long-term renewal of natural resources.

Alongside its environmental credentials, timber remains one of the most versatile construction materials available. From structural applications and timber frame systems to landscaping, fencing, cladding and interior finishes, it continues to be specified across a wide range of residential, commercial and public sector projects.

Looking beyond operational carbon

As buildings become more energy efficient in operation, greater attention is being given to the embodied carbon associated with construction materials.

This has encouraged architects, developers and contractors to consider not only how materials perform during a building's lifespan, but also how they are sourced, manufactured and ultimately reused or recycled.

Bio-based materials such as timber offer an opportunity to address both challenges. Their renewable nature, combined with responsible sourcing and sustainable forest management, means they can form part of a broader strategy to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment without compromising on performance.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's findings reinforce the importance of considering renewable materials alongside traditional circular economy approaches.

While no single material provides every answer, greater recognition of responsibly sourced bio-based products can help the industry broaden its approach to sustainable construction. Timber has been used successfully for centuries, and as demand grows for lower-carbon buildings, its combination of structural performance, versatility and renewable origins makes it an increasingly valuable material for modern construction.

As the industry continues to evolve, ensuring bio-based materials are part of the conversation will be essential to delivering buildings that are both high performing and better aligned with long-term sustainability goals.
