At Taylor Maxwell, we’re proud of the people who shape our business. Our team help us to uphold the best industry practices, support our staff, stakeholders and customers, and drive our continued success in supplying the best in timber and facade materials.

Today, we’re sharing insights from our Timber Director Simon Tucker as he reflects on his journey in the timber industry, what inspires him and what he’s looking forward to for the future of Taylor Maxwell’s timber division.

Hi Simon, to begin, how long have you been working in the timber industry?

It’s been 27 years now!

Can you tell us a bit about your career before joining Taylor Maxwell?

Of course - I began my career in the hardwood importing and sales sector, where I stayed for 10 years. In 2009 I transitioned into softwood and sawmilling, which was a great opportunity to broaden my understanding of the market. Funnily enough, my next role was in purchasing where I was a customer of Taylor Maxwell’s. Working with the Taylor Maxwell team during this time allowed me to gain a strong understanding of the business before coming on board.

What milestones have been most memorable during your time at Taylor Maxwell?

Without doubt, winning two TTJ Awards in 2023 was a standout moment. We won ‘Timber Trader of the Year’ and ‘Softwood Trader: Importer of the Year’. It was an incredible recognition of the team’s hard work, and I feel that it really reflects the trust that our customers place in us.

Without doubt, winning two TTJ Awards in 2023 was a standout moment.

What excites you most about the timber industry today?

I’m particularly excited by the ever-expanding role that timber is playing in the wider built environment, particularly with the growing focus on sustainability. If you look at how extensively timber is used in housing and construction abroad, it’s clear there is huge potential for us to do the same in the UK. It’s exciting to think about how far we could go!

Looking ahead, what are your goals for 2025 and beyond at Taylor Maxwell?

I’m looking forward to working with the Hardwood team to expand that area of the business. We’ve already opened a new warehouse and showroom in Portishead, which is the start of many exciting things to come. On a broader level, I’m looking forward to seeing Taylor Maxwell continue to grow and cement its position as a market leader in the industry. We certainly have the team and the vision in place to achieve great things.

Thanks for taking the time to chat to us Simon, it’s been great to speak to you and learn more about your vison for the future of Taylor Maxwell Timber.
